What is php? Do I need to use it?

I see many references to something called PHP in SharkSpace website. Can you tell me what it is? Do I need to use it?

PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) is a server-side HTML embedded scripting language which is used in scripts, etc. It is not mandatory that you use PHP for your webpages, but our server does support PHP if you require it.
